Flammable vapors and gases could cause considerable damage if they come in contact with an ignition source. Being able to reliably detect the presence of the vapors and gas allows the end user the ability to react and mitigate a major event.
The center of a flammable gas monitoring system is the gas detection control unit. FM Approved control units monitor the status of gas detectors (typically point or open path) and respond if one or more detectors indicate the presence of flammable vapors and gases. A variety of notification appliances are then used to notify the building occupants when the concentrations in air approach the explosive range.
Gas detection control units are very similar to, and are often combined with, fire alarm control panels because the response time is usually shorter for a gas detection control unit.
